His practice covers all aspects of competition law, including cartels, abuse of dominance, mergers, and marketing practices. He has expertise in a wide range of industries, including airlines, banking and payment systems, securities, waste, technology, pharmaceuticals, energy, manufacturing, and construction. Michael has also acted for the Commissioner of Competition on several matters. Michael has appeared as counsel in numerous contested hearings in the Competition Tribunal. He has acted as trial and appellate counsel before all levels of court, as well as domesticand international arbitral tribunals. Michael was called to the Bar in 1998, after clerking for Justice John Sopinka of the Supreme Court of Canada. He received his LL.B. from Dalhousie University in 1996, his M.A. from the University of Toronto in 1991, and his B.A. from the University of Saskatchewan in 1988. Michael lectures and writes frequently on competition law and commercial litigation topics. He is an assistant editor of Fundamentals of Canadian Competition Law, and is the editor of the Canadian Competition Law Review and of The Litigator. He is an active member of the Canadian Bar Association, the American Bar Association, the Advocates’ Society, and the Toronto Lawyers Association.
