Michael F. Tobin is a dedicated civil litigation and construction law attorney based in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Raised in Aberdeen, South Dakota, Michael's father, Tom, instilled in him from an early age a passion for education and the legal profession through decades of practicing law in their community. After graduating from Roncalli High School in 1994 with honors, Michael pursued his educational journey at the University of Notre Dame, where he earned degrees in American History and Government. Following this, he returned to South Dakota to attend the University of South Dakota School of Law, graduating magna cum laude in 2001.
During his law school years, Michael distinguished himself with various honors and awards, including being named Sterling Honor Graduate and receiving the Lexis/Nexus Award for having the highest GPA in his class. Additionally, he received the Order of Barristers award for his exceptional oral argument skills and advocacy in Moot Court competitions.
After graduating from law school, Michael served as a Law Clerk for Judge Charles B. Kornmann of the United States District Court for the District of South Dakota. In this role, he gained invaluable experience by observing dozens of jury trials and assisting with various aspects of litigation under Judge Kornmann's guidance.
Michael joined his current firm, Boyce Law Firm LLP, in 2003, where he now serves as a member of the Litigation Section. His practice focuses on civil litigation, with a particular emphasis on representing professionals such as engineers, architects, and contractors in their legal disputes. He also handles cases involving teachers, schools, lawyers, physicians, nursing homes, insurance companies (in bad faith litigation), insurance agents/producers, trusts and estates in probate litigation.
Michael has successfully tried numerous cases both at the state and federal court levels and appears before the South Dakota Supreme Court and the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit. He is especially passionate about appellate advocacy, a component he enjoys immensely.
Outside of his professional endeavors, Michael dedicates significant time to his family. You can often find him at sporting events with his five children or participating in various activities they enjoy together. As a board member of the St. Francis House in Sioux Falls, Michael is committed to their mission of housing and supporting those who are homeless. Despite the chaos he occasionally faces within professional circles, Michael maintains an unwavering commitment to fairness and justice.
