About Doak
Doak Horne is a partner in Gowlings’ Calgary office, practising in the area of intellectual property litigation and patent prosecution for over 25 years. Doak is a Registered Patent and Trademark Agent in Canada and the United States, as well as a registered professional engineer. He has been involved in preparation, filing, and prosecution of patents, trade-marks, and industrial designs before the Canadian Intellectual Property Office, and been extensively involved in licensing matters as well as trade mark oppositions , expungements, and infringement proceedings. Doak has experience in the areas of patent litigation, patent impeachment and patent ownership disputes, and ownership disputes relating to intellectual property generally, as well as actions involving trade secrets and passing off actions . He has appeared before the Trial and Appeal Courts of the Federal Court of Canada, as well as all levels of the Alberta Courts as well as the Ontario Superior Court and Court of Appeal in matters relating to patents, trade-marks, copyrights and industrial designs and related matters, including employment issues (breach of fiduciary duty) and contractual disputes . Prior to entering the legal profession, Doak was a professional engineer in jet engine design with Pratt & Whitney Canada. Doak is a regular speaker at and contributor to Canadian Bar Association and Insight seminars on intellectual property and related security interests, and has contributed articles on similar subjects to trade and professional publications.
