About Debra
Debra K. Schuster: Leading Elder Law Attorney in St. Louis
Debra K. Schuster is a dedicated and experienced elder law attorney with a profound commitment to protecting the rights and well-being of seniors and individuals with disabilities. Since 1999, Ms. Schuster has focused exclusively on elder law issues, a rapidly growing area of legal expertise where her deep knowledge and compassionate approach truly shine. Recognizing the significant need for specialized legal guidance in this field, Ms. Schuster has established herself as a trusted advocate for clients facing complex challenges related to incapacity, financial exploitation, and long-term care planning.
Ms. Schuster’s practice goes far beyond simply understanding the law; it’s built on a foundation of empathy and a genuine desire to support families during what can be incredibly difficult times. Her personal experiences – including her mother and grandfather’s battles with dementia – have provided invaluable insight into the emotional and practical stressors faced by caregivers and loved ones. This understanding led her to become a certified Elder and Adult Mediator, equipping her with the skills to facilitate productive conversations about crucial end-of-life decisions, such as stopping driving privileges, transitioning to assisted living or skilled nursing facilities, and delegating financial responsibilities.
At the core of Ms. Schuster’s approach is a collaborative, multi-disciplinary strategy. She works closely with a network of trusted professionals, including social workers, geriatric and care managers, financial planners, accountants, psychiatrists, and geriatric physicians, to develop comprehensive solutions tailored to each client’s unique circumstances. This integrated approach is crucial when addressing the myriad, often complicated, issues surrounding age and disability, ensuring that all relevant factors are considered – from legal matters to financial security and quality of life.
Ms. Schuster’s services encompass a wide range of critical legal matters, including:
- Guardianship and Conservatorship:** Providing legal representation in contested guardianship and conservatorship proceedings, protecting vulnerable individuals from exploitation and ensuring their best interests are upheld.
- Financial Exploitation Prevention & Recovery:** Aggressively combating financial abuse and exploitation of seniors and individuals with disabilities, working to recover stolen assets and hold perpetrators accountable.
- Durable Power of Attorney & Trust Administration:** Navigating the complexities of Durable Power of Attorney documents and trust administration, ensuring proper asset management and protecting beneficiaries.
- Long-Term Care Planning:** Offering strategic advice on long-term care planning, including Medicaid planning and exploring options for accessing government benefits.
- Estate Planning for Seniors:** Developing comprehensive estate plans that address the specific needs of seniors, maximizing their assets while ensuring their wishes are honored.
Driven by a passion for community engagement and a belief in the importance of collaboration, Ms. Schuster is deeply involved in local initiatives. She is a past president of the Breakthrough Coalition, a multidisciplinary group of senior care and disability community providers, and served as the past Vice President of Operations for Memory Care Home Solutions. Her dedication extends to board service for Brith Shalom Kneseth Israel and her active participation in the BAMSL Elder Law Committee, where she’s been a key figure in advocating for legislative change. Notably, Ms. Schuster has been a tireless advocate, chairing an ad hoc committee of the Missouri Bar Association since 2014 that has authored proposed legislation for the passage of the Designated Healthcare Decisionmaker Act – a significant step toward ensuring that individuals have control over their healthcare decisions.
Recognized for her exceptional legal skills and dedication, Ms. Schuster has received numerous accolades, including being named “Best Lawyer of the Year” by St. Louis Magazine in 2016 and featured as “The Face of Elder Law” in the June 2017 issue. Her commitment extends beyond her professional accomplishments; she’s actively involved in the legal community, sharing her expertise and shaping the future of elder law in Missouri.
Ms. Schuster’s personal life reflects her values of family and service. She is the proud mother of two sons – an attorney practicing in Boulder, Colorado, and a graduate student in Biomedical Robotics at the University of Washington – and is often accompanied by her therapy dog, Yadi, who provides comfort and support to clients. She approaches each case with a deeply personal commitment to understanding her clients' unique circumstances and providing them with the representation, advocacy, and advice necessary to navigate the complexities of elder and disability law.
