David McLauchlan is an associate within the Intellectual Property Practice Group. David advises clients on regulatory, contractual, and intellectual property matters in the life sciences with emphasis on the pharmaceutical and agri-food industries. He has extensive experience drafting, reviewing and negotiating clinical trial and other research-related agreements, as well as informed consent documents.David is active in the firm’s corporate IP group, performing due diligence reviews and negotiating IP-related terms in the context of joint ventures and mergers and acquisitions. He also provides compliance advice in relation to federal and provincial regulations, as well as professional and ethical requirements.With degrees in biochemistry, biomedical ethics and law, David brings a multi-disciplinary approach to his practice. Prior to joining the firm, he served as Senior Legal Advisor at the TransMedTech Institute, supporting its efforts to bring medical technologies to market, and completed his articling at the Center of Genomics and Policy at McGill University, where his work focused on ethical-legal issues related to reproductive medicine and genomics research. He also served as panel chair with Veritas IRB, the first Canadian Research Ethics Committee (REC) to be accredited.David’s approach to client service is to seek first to understand the client’s business needs and priorities, and then to propose solutions that reflect those needs and priorities, while explaining them in a way that empowers the client to implement his advice effectively.
